Infrared view of the Cat’s Paw Nebula (NGC 6334) taken by VISTA. NGC 6334 is a vast region of star formation about 5500 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Scorpius. The whole gas cloud is about 50 light-years across. NGC 6334 is one of the most active nurseries of young massive stars in our galaxy, some nearly ten times the mass of our Sun and most born in the last few million years. The images were taken through Y, J and Ks filters (shown as blue, green and red respectively) and the exposure time was five minutes per filter. The field of view is about one degree across.

The Cat´s Paw Nebula

This pan shows many details in a gorgeous cosmic watercolour of the star-forming region around the star R Coronae Australis that was captured by the Wide Field Imager (WFI), on the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope at ESO’s La Silla Observatory. Fine details of the bluish reflection nebula and the huge surrounding dust cloud are visible. This star-forming region is located some 420 light-years away in the small constellation of Corona Australis (the Southern Crown).

Due to the Earth's (blue circle) annual orbit around the Sun (larger yellow circle), the position of a nearby star (smaller yellow circle) appears to shift against the distant background. Over the course of a year the star moves in a tiny ellipse or circle in the sky. (The animation greatly exaggerates this apparent shift.)

Principle of (stellar) parallax

This pan sequence gives a closer view of a new VISTA image of the Tarantula Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud and the very rich surrounding area of sky. Many regions of star-formation, and many clusters of hot young stars are seen in great detail. This infrared image, made with ESO’s VISTA survey telescope, is from the VISTA Magellanic Cloud Survey. The project will scan a vast area — 184 square degrees of the sky (corresponding to almost one thousand times the apparent area of the full Moon), including our nearby neighbouring galaxies the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds.

Flying by a Venus Vulcano

Panning across an artist’s impression of how Triton, Neptune’s largest moon, might look from high above its surface. The distant Sun appears at the upper-left and the blue crescent of Neptune right of centre. Using the CRIRES instrument on ESO’s Very Large Telescope, a team of astronomers has been able to see that the summer is in full swing in Triton’s southern hemisphere.
